Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Working with patients in Perth, Dr. Chris Allen provides expert consultations for otoplasty, also known as ear surgery and having your ears ‘pinned back’. Assisting in creating a discreet and natural appearance, Dr Chris Allen and his team help you achieve your desired result. Ideal candidates include:

  • Patients who are self conscious about protruding ears
  • Patients with ears that lack natural creases or folds
  • Patients who dislike the appearance of their ears

Ear surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes one to one and a half hours. An incision is made behind the ear and cartilage is reshaped and sutured in place. This creates a natural fold and decreases the prominence of the ears. Occasionally, cartilage is removed to reduce the size of the ear. Wounds are sutured with dissolving sutures.

Following ear surgery, your head is wrapped in a gauze dressing to aid in the moulding of the ears. You’re generally able to head home the same or next day. After a few days, the gauze dressing is removed and a headband can be worn at night.

Most patients experience minimal pain that disappears by the second or third day. Swelling is mild to moderate for the first week following surgery and ears may ache for a few days. All pain is easily manageable with medication.

As all sutures are dissolvable, and no return consultation is required. You’re able to resume many activities within the second week and most by the third. We recommend taking around one week off work or school.

Ear surgery results vary according to the desired shape and appearance. Dr Chris Allen endeavours to provide a result that balances the facial appearance with a more natural curvature of the ears. You’ll feel more confident and comfortable with your overall appearance and issues of self consciousness should subside.
