Eyelid Surgery: What You Need to Know

Apr 24, 2018

Dr. Chris Allen operates a plastic surgery practice in Perth, and one of his many specialities is eyelid surgery, which he conducts from private hospitals in the Perth metro area. With years of experience to draw on, Dr Allen provides exceptional patient care and has a genuine interest in helping you achieve the results you are looking for.

What to Expect When You Get an Eyelift in Perth

During your initial consultation, Dr. Chris Allen himself will welcome you, after which he’ll run you through the semantics of the procedure and what your options are. You will also be shown a selection of before and after photos that will give you an idea of the results you can expect to achieve. This initial consultation will last approximately one hour, and will be the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.

His still will then provide with you a fully detailed quote – at this stage you can decide whether you’d prefer to have surgery only on your upper eyelids, or only on your lower eyelids, or both (though other medical or lifestyle factors may dictate this).

Your personalised one-on-one care with Dr Allen will continue from there; he’ll see you again approximately two weeks prior to your procedure, to go over the process and aftercare in more detail and answer any further questions that may have arisen since your initial visit. Most importantly, this will afford you the opportunity to get to know your doctor a little better, to ensure you feel confident, comfortable and relaxed about your upcoming procedure.

After the Procedure

If you opt for just an upper eyelid reduction, you can expect a recovery period of approximately 2 weeks. Upper eyelid procedures tend to result in less bruising than lower lids, and assuming all goes smoothly, you can expect to have your stitches removed after 4-5 days (this can vary depending on a case-by-case basis).

For lower eyelids, the bruising is sometimes found to be more noticeable, and will take longer to fade. Recovery usually takes 2-3 weeks, and the stitches dissolve and do not require removal.
Keep in mind that healing times will vary with each individual patient, but Dr. Chris Allen will provide excellent after surgery care, so you can rest assured your recovery is in very good hands.

Tips for a Good Recovery

As with any procedure, your body will need time to heal, so after your eyelift, it’s recommended you take it easy for a while. Make sure you get plenty of rest, and apply ice to the treated area. You should also avoid strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks.

If your eyelids don’t close properly after your procedure, don’t be alarmed – this is perfectly normal! To ease the swelling and ensure your eyelids remain moisturised, apply a saline solution to lubricate the skin. It’s important to protect your eyes from wind and sunlight during this time; and when going outside both sunglasses and a hat are an absolute must. You’ll also be provided with an ointment when you’re discharged that will keep your eyelids moisturised as you sleep.

Part of the recovery process is skipping the gym; it’s best practice to avoid any activities that raise your blood pressure to ensure a smooth and complete recovery. Driving, and working in front of a computer, should also be avoided, so if you’re getting an eyelid reduction you should be prepared for some quiet time at home.
