Scar Revision

Scar Treatment Perth, Western Australia

A scar is the result of the body’s normal healing response to an injury. Some wounds heal with fine imperceptible scars, others heal with thick, painful, unattractive scars that many people seek scar treatment for.

Scar revision surgery or scar treatment is designed to improve the appearance, symptoms or problems created by a less than ideal scar. Often scar treatment requires surgery which involves excision of the unsightly scar and careful suturing using a variety of techniques. The direction of the scar may also be changed to make it less perceptible.

Post operative care is also an important part of our scar treatment plan.  It is needed to obtain the best possible scar. Taping and silicone gel sheeting can be helpful.

Keloid Scars

People with Keloid scars commonly seek scar treatment.  These are a special type of scar that are elevated above the surrounding skin, extend beyond the original margins of the wound, do not regress with time, are very firm and have a high rate of recurrence. They should not be confused with slightly elevated scars that are thick (hypertrophic scars). Keloid scars are often associated with pain, burning, itching and stiffness.

Treatment of Keloids includes surgical excision, steroid injections, pressure dressings, topical silicone gel sheeting and radiation treatment. A combination of some of these scar treatment modalities will often lead to better results.
