Who is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia)?
- Men who have overdeveloped or enlarged breasts as a result of hormonal changes following puberty or following weight gain.
- Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame.
- Men who are embarrassed or self conscious about the large size of their breasts.
The Procedure
- General anaesthesia is used and the surgery takes about one to two hours.
- Excess breast tissue may be removed by liposuction, surgical excision or often both.
- Liposuction involves injecting fluid into the tissue and fat is suctioned out using small cannulas (hollow tubes) through a small incision.
- Thick glandular breast tissue may be excised via a small incision at the edge of the areola.
- The incisions are sutured with buried dissolvable sutures.
- Soft small drains may be used.
- A compression garment is worn for two to three weeks.
Recovery After Male Breast Reduction
- You can go home the next day or sometimes on the same day.
- Most patients experience minimal pain which is mostly gone by the next day and is easily controlled by medications.
- Swelling is mild to moderate for two to three days and then disappears over the next three weeks.
- There may be some bruising for one to two weeks.
- You can resume light activities in the first week and most normal activities by at least three weeks.
- Expect to be off work for about one to three weeks depending on the extent of the surgery and your type of work.
